Scramble Hosts Alexandria Community Shelter

Scramble Hosts Alexandria Community Shelter

BeGLITSE and Scramble are thrilled to provide all of the children at the Alexandria Community Shelter an incredible day of fun!

On Wednesday June 20, 2018, BeGLITSE will host the Summer Fun at Scramble event to give every child currently housed at the Alexandria Community Shelter (ACS) a day filled with smiles.  The ACS is a city-owned 64-bed year-round emergency shelter operated by the Volunteers of America Chesapeake that provides short-term emergency shelter for men, women, and children.  While ACS has been an integral part of the Alexandria community for a number of years, it is relatively unknown outside of the wonderful people who volunteer and work in the shelter and its residents.

One longtime Alexandria resident that was previously unaware of ACS is Laurence Smallman, owner of Scramble ( – a unique play space with a seamless blend of physical and cognitive play that opened to rave reviews in Alexandria in November 2017.  Laurence has lived in Alexandria for 16 years and is proud to raise his children in the community.  After learning about the effort to rejuvenate ACS and support their incredible mission, Laurence immediately jumped at the opportunity to help in any way that he can.  “I believe that a strong community is vital to the health of a City and those that live there – I am delighted that Scramble has had such a warm welcome since opening and that it can give back to our community in this wonderful way.  It is an honor to be able to give the children of this vital shelter an opportunity to enjoy the amazing play at Scramble, as well as our great food!” Throughout his years living in Alexandria, Laurence has been very active in the Alexandria Soccer Association, as a coach and league commissioner, and within his kids’ PTA at Maury Elementary where he was integral to the initiative that improved the schoolyard.  Following this kick-off event, he is teaming with BeGLITSE to provide ongoing support to the Alexandria Community Shelter.

In addition to the food and play time that will be provided by Scramble, a number of local businesses that share a love of the community and children have come together to support this event.  Treats will be provided by The Dairy Godmother (  The children and their families will arrive at Scramble in a stretch white Hummer courtesy of BeGLITSE.  Each child participating in the event will receive a personalized tote with their name stitched on it courtesy of Del Ray’s own The Purple Goose (  Each tote will include items that have been hand-selected for each child based on a personal survey they completed.  If you would like to donate items for the gift bags, please email BeGLITSE at

BeGLITSE has partnered with the Volunteers of America Chesapeake to provide volunteer, fundraising, and marketing support for ACS with a focus on facility renovation and the development of programs that provide guidance and support for the individuals and families of ACS.
